What diameter floats on helium?

Helium lifts, the skin weighs

Helium lift grows with the volume of the sphere (diameter cubed), the skin weight only with its surface (squared). In small spheres the skin wins. A light single-skin sphere floats from 3 m, a double-skin one - with its second layer and print - from 4.5 m.

Estimate: lift 1 kg per m³ of helium, skin approx. 0.45 kg per m² (single-skin) and 0.7 kg per m² (double-skin). Actual lift depends on temperature, altitude and helium purity.

Single-skin or double-skin sphere?

A single-skin sphere is one layer of fabric: white or transparent, without print. A logo is applied with a transfer-film sticker. A double-skin sphere has an outer skin with full-colour print over the whole surface and a gas-tight bladder. Both can work on air or - from the right diameter - on helium.

From what diameter does an advertising sphere float on helium?

Single-skin from 3 m, double-skin from 4.5 m - the second layer and the print add weight. A 3 m sphere holds about 14 m³ of helium, 4.5 m about 48 m³, 5 m about 65 m³ and 6 m about 113 m³. A helium sphere is anchored with lines to heavy objects nearby or to permanent structures, not to sandbags.

What is a small printed sphere for?

A 3.5-4 m double-skin sphere with full print stands at the entrance, on stage, on water, or hangs from a hall ceiling or truss. It is inflated with the electric pump included - no constant power needed.

Volume

How much helium or air does a sphere need?

The volume of a sphere is π·d³/6 - that much helium or air fills it. A 50 l cylinder at 200 bar gives about 9 m³ of helium.

Questions

Helium and printed spheres - questions

Can a single-skin sphere be printed?

No. A single-skin sphere is white or transparent. A logo can be applied with a transfer-film sticker, which is quoted separately. Full-colour print over the whole surface is only possible on a double-skin sphere.

From what diameter does a sphere float on helium?

A single-skin sphere from 3 m, a double-skin one from 4.5 m. A smaller sphere holds too little helium for the weight of its skin, so it will not float - it is used on the ground or suspended.

Can a single-skin sphere be filled with helium?

Yes, from 3 m in diameter. A single-skin sphere is lighter than a double-skin one, so it floats at a smaller diameter - but it has no print; the logo is applied with a film sticker.

How do you anchor a helium sphere?

With lines tied to heavy objects nearby or to structures permanently fixed to the ground. Sandbags and ballast weights are not suitable - they are only used for a sphere standing on the ground.

How much helium does a sphere need?

As much as its volume: 4.5 m is about 48 m³, 5 m about 65 m³ and 6 m about 113 m³. A 50 l cylinder at 200 bar gives about 9 m³ of helium, so a 5 m sphere needs about 8 cylinders.

What is a small double-skin sphere for?

A double-skin sphere under 4.5 m has full print but will not float on helium. It stands on the ground - at the entrance, on stage, on water - or hangs from a hall ceiling or truss.

Does the sphere need a constant power supply?

No. It is a sealed-air sphere: you inflate it with the electric pump included and close the valve. Power is needed only for inflation.
